Sometimes, such a sensation can be felt only in one hand, while at other times, both the hands can get affected. Numbness and tingling in hands can stem due to various reasons, some of which can be minor like, keeping the hands in a single position for a prolonged time period. However, it can also be associated with certain serious diseases such as, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. Sometimes, numbness and tingling in hands can be the first sign of an impending stroke. Therefore, persistent numbness or tingling in your hands or fingers is not a minor discomfort, but needs immediate medical attention. Read more on stroke symptoms.

Causes of Numbness and Tingling in Hands

As has been mentioned already, there can be several causes of numbness and tingling in hands and fingers, which is sometimes, accompanied by some other symptoms like, a burning sensation, weakness and pain in the hands. These symptoms along with the sensation of numbness and tingling can start all of a sudden or develop gradually. Know more about the causes of numbness in fingers and left arm numbness causes. A few of the most important and common causes of numbness and tingling in hands and fingers are

Being in the same position for a prolonged time period, and pressure on the hands are some of the most common factors, that can cause numbness and tingling sensation in hands or arms. This is the reason why people having the habit of sleeping with the hands under the head, often feel hand numbness.
Keeping the hands above the level of heart for a long time can too result in numbness and tingling in hands and fingers, as it can prevent normal blood flow to this part of the body.
If you get numbness and tingling in hands while sleeping, then it can be carpal tunnel syndrome, a disorder caused by the compression of a nerve in the carpal tunnel, which is located in the wrist. Along with hands, it can cause numbness and tingling in fingers.
Interruption in the normal supply of blood to the hands and fingers can also cause pain and numbness. Such interruption in blood flow can take place, due to plaque formation within the arterial wall.
A herniated disc can press the spinal nerves to cause numbness, pain and tingling sensation in the hands, shoulder, neck and upper back region.
Spondylosis, especially cervical spondylosis is another condition, that can put pressure on the spinal cord or the nerve roots present in the neck, to cause numbness and tingling in hands and neck.
Sometimes, injury of the arms, wrist, fingers and shoulder blade can too cause stiffness and numbness in hands, fingers and shoulder.
Many a times, vitamin B12 deficiency, use of certain medications as well as excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking can also cause numbness and tingling in hands.Apart from these, numbness and tingling in hands can be a sign of some medical conditions including, diabetes, strokes, multiple sclerosis, ganglion cyst, hypothyroidism, Raynaud’s syndrome or disease and peripheral neuropathy.
Diagnosis and Treatment for Numbness and Tingling in Hands

A complete analysis of the medical history of the affected person, and the symptoms of the condition, followed by neurological examinations can help to diagnose hand numbness and tingling. Along with these, complete blood count test, thyroid function test, cold stimulation test, and test for determining the level of vitamins and minerals in the body are also carried out. Additionally, physicians often perform tests for measuring the level of blood sugar, CT scan of the head and the spine, MRI of the head and spine, electromyography (EMG), angiogram, myelography and X-ray of the affected area.

As numbness and tingling in hands can be caused by several factors, treatment of this condition mainly depends on accurate diagnosis. If overexertion of the hand and wrist is responsible for causing hand numbness, then rest can help to improve the symptoms. Exercises and physical therapy can too provide significant relief in arm or hand numbness. Similarly, controlling diabetes and taking nutritional supplements are some other methods, that can treat certain specific causes of numbness and tingling in hands. Correcting your sleeping position can too help to prevent hand numbness. Read more on
Left Arm Tingling
Tingling Hands
To sum up, for an appropriate treatment of numbness and tingling in hands, it is very essential to diagnose the condition. It should be properly evaluated with the help of an expert physician, as many a times, numbness and tingling in hands can be a sign of some major medical conditions like, strokes, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. This is particularly applicable, if numbness in fingers and hands is troubling you for a considerable length of time. In the meantime, avoid overexertion and placing too much pressure on the affected hands.

Numb fingers, as the name suggests, refers to the condition wherein you lose sensation in your digits. Apart from the fingers, the problem of numbness can affect other body parts like the hands, legs and shoulders. As I have said, if you have infrequent attacks of numbness, then you should not worry. However, if you realize that it is getting way too frequent and is also causing other abnormal symptoms, then you might suspect some underlying neural conditions affecting you. Technically, numbness in finger is not a condition, but a symptom of something else. It might be accompanied by other symptoms like weakness, tingling sensations, sharp pain and perhaps, a burning sensation in the fingers. Some people also come up with complaints about having numb fingertips. In order to know what factors are considered to be the causes of numb fingers, and what treatment is followed, you have to read the rest of the article.

Causes of Numb Fingers

Most mild cases of numb fingers may arise due to inappropriate sleeping positions. It may happen that you unconsciously place your hands beneath your body while sleeping. Doing this may cause a lack of blood supply to the arm, resulting in pain and numbness in the arm including the fingers. Some people have the habit to wear straps for long period of time. So it is common for their fingers to feel numb. Cases like these get resolved on their own once the arm is placed in a normal position.

Frequent episodes of the fingers going numb may have certain underlying medical conditions in the body. Common ones include alcohol abuse, type 2 diabetes, HIV/AIDS, injury to the spinal cord. Apart from these, conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome (a disorder that occurs due to compression in the nerve in the carpal tunnel; causes profound pain and in some cases numbness too), Raynaud’s syndrome (causes different body parts to go numb in response to cold temperatures or stress), stroke, and B-12 deficiency. Numb fingers during pregnancy, according to experts, is most often caused by carpal tunnel syndrome.

Other causes of numbness in fingers include:

Lyme disease
Multiple sclerosis
Cervical spondylosis
Ganglion cysts
Syphilis
Broken shoulder blade
Vasculitis
Drugs employed for chemotherapy
Amyloidosis
Sjogren’s syndrome

Treatment of Numb Fingers

Most people stay dubious about when is the right time that they should pay a visit to a doctor. According to experts, if patients are not able to move their limbs, have lost their bladder control, experience changes in vision, faces difficulty in walking and speaking, then they have enough reasons to make way for emergency medical help.

Treatment of numb fingers or any part of the body is decided by the severity of the condition. Identifying the underlying cause and addressing it is an important part of the treatment of numbness in left fingers and right fingers. For example, if carpal tunnel syndrome has been found to be the cause, then the patient would be recommended to follow some arm exercises. Use of non-steroid anti-rheumatic drugs may be an important part of the treatment. Apart from this, it is really important for the patient to take ample amount of rest while he/she is healing. Going for physical therapy classes aids to the muscle strength and improve range of motion.

Patients can make use of ice packs to reduce the numbness in fingers and toes, as it improves the blood circulation. Also, massaging the numb fingers helps a lot in most cases. To give you some prevention tips, sleep in a proper posture, avoid placing your hands behind the back of the chair, and work with electric screw drivers if you need to. And in case Raynaud’s disease happens to be the cause, make use of warm gloves at low temperatures.

When we experience even a mild pain and tingling in left arm, the first thing that come to our mind is, maybe it is the initial symptoms of heart attack, although there are several other possible causes behind pain and tingling in left arm. You can get such pain regularly or it can happen all of a sudden. If you get it quite frequently, then you can rule out the possibility of a heart attack and look out for other causes that can lead to such a condition.

What are the Causes of Left Arm Pain and Tingling?

Left arm pain and tingling when caused due to heart attack is accompanied other symptoms, like, numbness, squeezing in the chest, muscle cramps, sweating, breathlessness, etc. This is a serious health condition and needs medical attention immediately. Another serious health problem that can cause left arm pain and tingling is stroke. To know more read stroke symptoms.

When one or more disks in the neck is not in alignment with others, it puts extra pressure on the spinal nerves. This condition of pinched nerve in the shoulder or neck may result in frequent left arm pain and tingling. If there is inflammation in the nerves of the arm due to carpal tunnel syndrome (or pressure on the nerve of a wrist) or tennis elbow, then also one may experience similar kind of pain.

If there is a problem of bad circulation, then left arm pain and tingling may occur as sufficient amount of blood does not reach the arms. Mental stress can cause left arm pain tingling too. This is because different chemicals are released by our body as a result of stress which prompts the heart to pump blood faster which results in pain and tingling in the left arm. Other possible causes of left arm pain and tingling are awkward movement of arms, underactive thyroid, side effects of medicines, multiple sclerosis, etc. You can also read:

Possible Causes for Tingling in Left Arm
Left Arm Pain in Women
How to Diagnose Left Arm Pain Tingling?

First of all, check whether your lying or sitting posture is giving any pressure on your left arm or shoulder. Due to this kind of pressure, you may get a “dead arm” sensation which will be relieved once you change your posture. If you observe that the pain is increasing and other symptoms of heart attack are showing up, then there is a chance of heart attack, so call for emergency medical help without any delay.

For other symptoms also you should consult the doctor who will diagnose the exact cause of left arm pain. A sense of coldness in your arm is mostly diagnosed as bad circulation. This problem is not as serious as heart attack but it requires proper medical treatment. If you have started any new medicines and you are getting this pain after the intake of these medicines, then it could be the side effects of those medicines. Doctors will also inquire if you have a medical history of excessive stress and panic attacks in the past.

How is the Treatment for Left Arm Pain Tingling Done?

If it is an emergency medical condition like heart attack or stroke, the patient needs hospitalization. In all other cases, measures can be taken to provide relief to the pain. After diagnosing the cause of the pain, doctors prescribe pain killers, like, aspirin or ibuprofen. In some cases, steroid injections are given.

For any cause other than that of heart attack and stroke, doctors would mostly advise you to keep your left arm at rest so that the pressure on the muscles and nerves of the arm are relieved from the stress. Those activities, like, writing, typing, swimming, etc. and sports like tennis or bowling that put pressure on the arms need to be stopped. If you have to stop the movement of your left arm completely, then the doctor will suggest you to use a splint.

There could be swelling in the arm due to tennis elbow or carpal syndrome. In that case cold compression by wrapping up ice in a cloth often helps. Application of ice for 10-20 minutes daily can help in bringing down the inflammation. If the pain is caused due to any injury of the muscles, then hot compression with the help of a heating pad is recommended.

Left arm pain and tingling is a warning sign of a potential illness. Therefore, you need to be proactive in identification of the causes and get the treatment done as soon as possible so that the problem does not get aggravated. However, no need to panic as all the health problems related to left arm pain and tingling can be cured.

Are you suffering from a lot of pain, numbness, weakness and tingling sensation in some part of your body? If yes, then you may be suffering from a pinched nerve. Let us go into the details of what is a pinched nerve.

What is a Pinched Nerve

There are 24 vertebrae and each vertebra are separated by shock absorbing disks. These shock absorbing disks are soft and gelatinous structures that provide cushioning between two vertebrae and prevent them from touching. There are many nerves and nerve roots around the spinal cord and these are in turn surrounded by muscles, tendons, cartilages. When the disc between the spinal cord gets herniated it causes a pinched nerve. The herniated disk in the lower spine may put pressure on a nerve root. This causes pain that radiated down to the back of the leg. Or one may experience pain and numbness in the hand or fingers due to a pinched nerve in the wrist. A pinched nerve can happen anywhere in the body.

Symptoms of a Pinched Nerve

The symptoms of a pinched nerve are tell tale signs of a problem in your body. The pinched nerve symptoms are as follows:

Numbness and low sensation in the area that is covered by the pinched nerve.
Sharp pain that radiates outward.
The pain is aggravated by coughing or sneezing when the pinched nerve originates from the spinal cord.
One may experience ‘pins and needles’ or tingling sensation.
One may experience muscle weakness and twitching in the affected area.
One may experience frequent ‘fallen asleep’ foot or hand. You can read more on pinched nerve in arm.
Pinched Nerve Risk Factors

Pinched nerve symptoms are commonly seen in people with poor posture. When one has poor posture sitting or standing it will add pressure on the spine that will in turn cause pressure on the nerves leading to pinched nerve symptoms. You can read more on pinched nerve in neck in the article pinched nerve in neck symptoms.

The other risk factor includes osteoarthritis where the nerves are pinched between the bone spurs that leads to symptoms of pinched nerve symptoms. Pinched nerve may be caused by repetitive hand, shoulder, or wrist moment. Working on the computer, assembly line, etc. increases the likelihood of developing pinched nerves symptoms. Obesity may add extra weight and pressure on the nerves leading to pinched nerves. And some people are just genetically build to be prone for developing pinched nerve.

How to Treat a Pinched Nerve

Many cases of pinched nerves are treated by just rest and ice compress. You may need to stop all the activities that may be aggravating the pinched nerve symptoms. The doctor may advice you to wear a splint or brace depending on the area affected with symptoms of pinched nerves. You may need to wear a splint nerve at night in case of carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and even during the day to minimize the movement of your wrists.

The doctor may prescribe non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like ibuprofen and naproxen. They help to relieve and lower the inflammation around the nerve. In case of severe pain, the doctor may prescribe corticosteroid injections to minimize the inflammation and pain.

You may even have to visit physical therapist for physical exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles of the affected area. You may need to carry out pinched nerve exercises that help relieve the pressure off the nerve. If nothing helps relieve the pain after these conservative treatments for several weeks to few months, one may need to undergo surgery. The type of surgery depends on the location of pinched nerve. In case of pinched nerve in neck or lower back, the surgeon may remove some portion of the disc or bone spurs that are causing pressure on the nerve. Pinched nerve in wrists may involve surgery to release the nerve tissue pressure in the wrist or elbow.

Pinched Nerve Prevention

You can prevent the pinched nerve symptoms by maintaining a good posture to prevent pressure on the spinal cord nerves. You should exercise regularly and carry out strengthening and flexibility exercises to make your muscles strong. In case of repetitive actions due to work, you need to take frequent breaks to allow the muscles and nerves to relax. And you should eat right and maintain your weight to prevent the numerous health problems associated with obesity.

This was some information related to pinched nerve symptoms. You should consult your doctor for medical assistance and help in treatment of pinched nerve. If left untreated, pinched nerve may cause peripheral neuropathy, tarsal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, etc. I hope this article has helped you understand the pinched nerve symptoms.

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

The human wrist comprises a number of joints and muscle groups that make complex movements possible. Tasks like picking up objects, writing and other routine chores demand different wrist movements, consistently. The median nerve in the wrist plays a vital role in facilitating these movements and maneuvers. When this nerve is compressed as a result of some impact, the functionality of the carpal ligament is greatly affected. This painful condition is clinically referred to as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. The condition is usually idiopathic or without any definite cause most of the time. However, genetic factors, environmental factors and occupational triggers are not ruled out during diagnosis. The condition is characterized by:
Waking at night, due to sever pain in the wrist.
Nerve dysfunction such as numbness, weakness and atrophy.
Paresthesia or a burning/tingling sensation in the fingers.
Frequent dropping of objects held.
Wasting of the thenar muscles and weakness of palmar abduction.
The onset of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is also associated with trauma, multiple myeloma, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy and hypothyroidism. Structural and biological genetic predisposition are also trigger factors. The condition is commonly observed in people whose occupations demand the need for:
Repetitive tasks.
Applied, deliberate wrist-force.
Deliberate wrist-concentrated posture.
Consistent grasping and wrist-manipulating activities.
Deliberate stretching of the biomechanics of the upper limb.
Psychological distress at work.
Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Surgery:

Among the many exercise intensive remedial measures to treat the Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, in extreme cases Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Surgery is an important consideration. This ‘release’ surgery is conducted with the use of an endoscope. The arthroscopic device is used to release the transverse carpal ligament. Typically, the surgeon makes one or two smaller incisions and conducts the whole carpal tunnel release surgery endoscopically or via minimal invasion. The use of a flexible plastic tube, fitted with a small camera, allows the surgeon to identify the transverse carpal ligament and ‘release’ the compression with the help of a retrograde device. Today, surgeons opt for apparatus and surgical protocol according to individual preference. While the ‘Chow’ is a two-portal device, the ’3M Agee’ is a single portal release system. Both methods are popular, since they both guarantee small or limited incisions.

The patient is usually sedated under general anesthesia for endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery. The numbing agent is injected into the palm and a tourniquet is placed to prevent excessive flow of blood to the region. Incisions called portals are made, one in the palm and the other on the wrist. The carpal ligament is accessed through the half inch incisions. The endoscope, a miniature video camera is then lowered into the wrist and surgical implements are manipulated according to display on the video monitor. The Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Surgery procedure does not take more than 10 minutes. The out-patient procedure enables the patient to go home immediately after surgery. Other than pain relievers and antibiotics to speed healing, no other drugs are administered. The doctor may recommend a splint for a fortnight, to protect the wrist as it heals. Common directives suggest refraining from lifting heavy weights for at least two months after the surgery. The patient’s occupation dictates the period of absenteeism from work required. This surgery is considered only when the recorded symptoms do not improve after extensive nonsurgical treatment and if the symptoms severely restrict routine activities.

I sue, you sue, we all sue – and the sillier the cause, the better. Frivolous lawsuits are the stuff of television shows like Philly and Boston Public. But that’s fiction, right? You think.

A woman in Florida has sued her employers for developing carpal tunnel syndrome – also known as repetitive motion injury – in both hands. Why should this make news? It’s a common occupational hazard for data entry operators and others who spend all day typing on a keyboard. Right, except the lady in question is no data entry operator and she didn’t get her tendons in a twist from too much typing. She got it from too much masturbating.

The woman, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, is a phone sexline operator. Her job description requires her to masturbate regularly – up to seven times a day – while indulging her clients’ sexual fantasies. The ambidextrous female used one hand to answer the phone and the other to give herself an orgasm during the verbal foreplay. It’s all about customer satisfaction. Isn’t that what they teach you at management school?

The phone sex lady has filed for worker’s compensation from Florida’s Department of Labor and Employment Security. She has claimed weekly benefits of $267 and also asked to be reimbursed $30,000 for medical bills reimbursement, after a neurosurgeon operated on her hand to relieve the pain. Hey lady! You forgot to collect damages for mental trauma.

Now that’s what I call private enterprise at its finest. It’s no wonder that the USA is the leader of the free world.

The thumb is the most important finger on the human hand and the most used one as well. It would be impossible to grip things, if thumb was not there. Obviously, the continuous and extensive use of the thumb is bound to cause thumb injuries at some point of time. Though, you may be commonly experiencing thumb pain, the underlying cause may be different. The course of your thumb pain treatment would depend upon the cause of thumb pain.

What Causes Thumb Pain?

Skier’s Thumb

Skier’s thumb occurs due to an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament. This is a large ligament and a common point of thumb injuries. Spraining of this ligament leads to a condition called as skier’s thumb. Swelling and difficulty in moving the thumb are the main symptoms of skier’s thumb. Moreover will you experience an excruciating thumb pain when gripping things. Read more on thumb twitching.

Blackberry Thumb

This is the newest and the most common of all thumb pain causes. Mostly, it’s the younger generation that is mostly affected by this condition. ‘Blackberry thumb’ is the name given to thumb pain resulting due to excessive use of thumb for texting purpose. The repetitive use of thumb for the purpose of text messaging or operating other PDAs often results in injury to ulnar collateral ligament.

Thumb Injuries

Thumb pain arising from injuries while playing a sport or due to an accident is often chronic and lasts for several months. Here again, the cause is injury to ulnar collateral ligament. Since, these injuries are often of serious consequence, the ligament takes time to heal. As a result, the person has to endure thumb pain for a long time.

Thumb Arthritis

Thumb arthritis is the cause of chronic thumb joint pain. Just like any other joint in body, arthritis also affects the thumb joint. This is one of the thumb joint pain causes which makes the thumb stiff, thereby making any movement impossible. Cortisone injections may be recommended as a treatment option. Surgery is advised in extreme cases.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is often the cause of numbness in thumb accompanied by pain. The condition arises due to the compression of the median nerve at wrist, between the carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament. This causes the thenar muscles of the thumb to go numb. The numbness does not limit to thumb alone, but also spreads to the first three fingers as well as the majority of the hand. Since, inflammation of the tendon sheaths is the cause behind carpal tunnel syndrome, flexibility exercises of tendons relieves the thumb pain to some extent.

Broken Thumb

A fractured bone is the common and most painful of all thumb pain causes. A broken bone often leads to throbbing pain in thumb, even if you don’t move it. The broken bone can be held in place with the help of metal screws, pins, or plates. Surgery is only advised if the broken bone results in muscle loss.

Thus, thumb pain causes are myriad and there is a great difficulty in diagnosis of the correct cause. However, X-Rays can help diagnose the accurate cause of thumb pain. Isometric exercises are considered to be of great help in treating thumb pain.

Some people develop certain health issues like carpal tunnel syndrome or stiff body parts. If you follow correct exercises and techniques, then you can avoid contracting any or all office-related injuries. Also, these following office exercises have also been proven to heal certain symptoms of office-related injuries and help in recovery.

Office Exercises at Your Desk

For a while now, many organizations are stressing on following a strict office exercises to be performed by all employees. Simple office exercises like taking a 10 minute walk every couple of hours can really help avoid issues concerning your health. But if you can’t spare that much time or don’t wish to leave your desk to perform the exercises, then the following office exercises and stretches might come in handy.

Ear to Shoulder Exercise: Place your feet flat on the floor, your back straight and pushed back in the chair. Take a deep breath, while exhaling, slowly bring your left ear to your left shoulder. Inhale once more, and while exhaling, slowly bring yourself back to first position. Repeat the same movement on the other side. Do this exercise 5 – 6 times a day. Read more on frozen shoulder exercises.

Temple Exercise: Place your elbows on the desk and your hands over your temples. Slowly make small circular movements and rub the temples in a clockwise and anti-clockwise manner. Take deep breaths as you do this exercise 10 – 15 times on both sides.

Neck Stretch: Take a deep breath, raise both shoulders, and touch your ears. Keep the shoulders up and push them back as far as you can. Exhale and relax the shoulders. Repeat this exercise 5 times. For another neck stretch exercise, you will inhale and gently turn your head on the left side till you can feel the muscles stretched. Hold the pose for 5 seconds and exhale as you bring your head back to first position. Repeat the exercise on the other side. Read more on sagging neck exercises.

Shoulders & Back Stretch: Sit straight in your chair and place both the hands behind your head. Place the hands tightly in position and slowly pull the elbow back. Take them as far as possible (make sure you don’t sprain anything, just go till your body permits), and hold for 5 seconds. Release the elbows and bring them back to relaxing position. Repeat the exercise as many times as you want in order to get back pain relief.

Wrist Stretch: Fold your palms together in a namaste pose and place them high, near your chest. Now press your palms in and slightly lift your elbows up. Hold this pose for about 5 seconds. Follow the same technique, but this time, invert your hands so that the fingers point toward the floor. Hold this pose for about 5 seconds. Repeat this exercise at least 5 times a day. Read more on arm exercises.

Spinal Stretch: Place your feet flat on the floor, your spine straight and pushed back in the chair. As you twist your torso toward one side (right), contract your abs and hold the edge of your seat to hold the pose. Keep stretching and hold for about 20 – 30 seconds. Twist as far as you can, no need to push yourself too much. You will get better and will be able to stretch further with practice. Repeat on the other side. Do this exercise for 10 – 15 reps each side. Read more on cervical spine exercises.

Back Exercise: These office exercises for back pain work wonders on the spine and lower back muscles. For the first back exercise, get a tennis ball from home and while you’re sitting on your chair, keep the ball between the painful area and the back of the chair. Lean back to rest your back and as you push yourself against the ball, take long, deep breaths for about 5 minutes. For the second back exercise, keep your palms on your lower back and stretch the upper body backwards. Hold this pose for at least 5 seconds and repeat the exercise 5 times a day.

Leg Stretch: Sit straight, hold the seat of the chair, and raise your right leg 45 degrees high. Flex the foot and gently move your right leg outside (toward your right). Bring the leg back to the center and down to first position. While you’re stretching, keep your shoulders straight and unwind the neck and hands. Repeat the movement on the leg. For more intensity, hold the stretch for 15 seconds on each leg. Do 5 reps and keep increasing the reps according to your capacity. Read more on thigh exercises.

Relaxation & Meditation: Sit up straight on your chair, keep your spine straight and pressed back in the chair, and place both the feet flat on the floor. Take deep breaths and slowly dip your chin down on your chest. Relax the hands over your thighs and rest the shoulders to relieve tension. Close your eyes to fix your gaze between the eyebrows. Meditate for about 5 – 10 minutes in a day. Read more on yoga.

Tip on Office Exercises to Avoid Sleepiness

Take small walks while you’re on a coffee break(s). You can also ask your colleague(s) to join you; so instead of sitting and drinking coffee, you are walking and enjoying your coffee.
Try taking the stairs instead of the usual elevator. If your office is on the 10th or 20th floor, get off the elevator 3 – 5 floors below and climb the rest of the floors.
After having lunch, take a small walk around the office. If there’s a park or some stores nearby, try to take a walk there. When you come back from your mini walk, you will actually feel refreshed.
While you’re on the office phone, get up and walk back and forth your desk, instead of just sitting. Also, when you’re on the cell phone, take a walk to the coolers or coffee machine while talking.
Work pressures sometimes gets the best of us. Pay attention to your posture while you’re sitting at the desk and try not to hunch your back. Your forearms can get tight during the day as you keep typing without even realizing that you might get injured. Follow the above mentioned office exercises as they are beneficial for all age types. Many people complain about headaches and back pains when they come back home; these office exercises will help you return fresh to work and keep you concentrated.

If you are experiencing thumb twitching off late, then you need to sit up and take notice. This is not something you can afford to ignore as the repercussions of such action could be very extreme. There are plenty of thumb twitching causes that you may have heard of, but you must not panic as this is not something out of the ordinary. There are many people like you who are also experiencing thumb twitching and can find no reason to explain it. Just because you are experiencing twitching of thumb does not necessarily mean that you have contracted some major disease. Also read about muscle twitching.

It is important to keep in mind that the thumb contains voluntary muscles in it. It is not abnormal if it occasionally jumps or twitches by itself. This is a common occurrence and you must not be alarmed by it. There are many other muscles in the body as well that twitch involuntarily, like the toe muscles, leg muscles, arm muscles or even the eyes. Read more on eye twitching. But since the twitching of the thumb can be seen directly in front of us we tend to panic at the sight of it. Read more about muscle twitching in arm.

Thumb Twitching Causes
Now if you find yourself experiencing thumb twitching on a regular basis and feel that it is continuing for a period of time that can be considered abnormal, you should be aware of the possible causes of thumb twitching. There are many small niggles and injuries, one of the symptoms of which is the twitching of the thumb. In most likelihood, you probably have a repetitive motion injury of some sort, that is causing your thumb to twitch. A repetitive motion injury is something that is the prelude to serious nerve trauma or damage. You must visit a neurologist immediately and have your twitching thumb looked at. For the detection and treatment of nerve trauma there are very specific tests that need to be carried out, and only a specialist can carry out these procedures.

Some other common causes of excessive thumb twitching are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). The twitching of the thumb can also be caused by genetic compositions, and you can be assured that this is the cause if the twitching begins in the shoulders or the ribs. Some types of epilepsy and even Parkinson’s disease start in this way as well.

There are some other common causes for thumb twitching as well. Some of these causes are as follows.

Diet deficiency
Drug overdose
Drug side effects
Faulty exercise
Benign twitches
Tests Conducted for Thumb Twitching
There are many tests that a neurologist conducts to try and ascertain the possible causes of your twitching thumb. As a result of this, you may not receive a diagnosis right away and may even be required to visit the specialist a few more times. Some tests like urine tests, blood sugar level tests, nerve conduction tests and other regular blood tests will be carried out at the clinic itself, so they may not cause too much inconvenience. There will be a few other tests though, that will have to be performed at some outpatient facilities. Some of these tests are spinal tap, an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan and other specialist blood tests.

Also read further on the following topics.
Muscle Pain
Muscle Fatigue
Muscle Cramps
The most important thing to remember while experiencing thumb twitching is not to ignore the twitching. It could be a symptom of anything, explained or unexplained, and ignoring it would only increase the level of risk involved. While it is important to not panic at the sight of a twitching thumb, you must closely monitor it and if it occurs frequently and for long periods of time, you must go visit a specialist immediately.

Most of us spend a lot of time working on computers or texting on cell phones. Did you know that such activities could cause thumb pain? Gamer’s thumb, Xbox thumb or Blackberry thumb are all catchwords used for describing repetitive thumb strain injuries caused due to these activities. Besides repetitive strain, disorders affecting the thumb joint are also likely to cause thumb pain. Thumb pain is surely a very discomforting condition and it can affect your ability to perform simple activities. Sometimes, thumb pain could even radiate to the wrist and the forearm. One could also experience numbness, stiffness and swelling around the thumb joint. Wondering how to treat pain in thumb? Here’s some information on the causes and treatment of thumb pain.

Pain in Thumb: Causes

Thumb injuries and repetitive strain are the most common causes of thumb pain. When the carpometacarpal joint or the joint located to the base of the thumb gets affected due to injuries or bone disorders, one experiences thumb pain. Wear and tear of this joint due to arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis is most likely to cause stiffness, swelling and pain in thumb joint. Pain in thumb knuckle could also be caused due to osteoarthritis. Another condition that could cause pain in thumb area is De Quervain’s tendinitis. This condition is associated with the inflammation of the tendons at the base of the thumb. When the tendons thicken, it gives rise to thumb pain when gripping.

De Quervain tenosynovitis is another condition that could be responsible for causing thumb pain. There are two thumb tendons called abductor pollicis longus and extensor pollicis brevis which are placed along the inner edge of the wrist. As they travel along the wrist, they go through a tunnel coated with a slippery substance. This tunnel is called as tenosynovium. When the tenosynovium gets inflamed, the thumb tendons are unable to move properly. The restrictive movement of thumb tendons can lead to wrist and thumb pain. Numbness, tingling and thumb pain could also be caused due to carpal tunnel syndrome. These symptoms are experienced due to median nerve getting compressed at the wrist between the carpal bones and the transverse ligament. Sprains or injury to the connective tissue called ulna collateral ligament can also cause swelling and pain and restrict the movement of the thumb. This ligament is a connective band of fibrous tissues which connects the bones at the base of the thumb. Injury to this ligament is described as Skier’s thumb or Gamekeeper’s thumb.

Pain in Thumb: Treatment

Now that you are aware of the thumb pain causes, let’s move on to the thumb pain treatment. The treatment will vary depending on the causes of thumb pain. Since repetitive strain injuries are very likely to cause thumb knuckle pain, you must refrain from overuse. Rest is very important for speeding up the healing process of the damaged ligaments and other structures of the thumb joint. If the X-rays indicate a bone fracture, surgical intervention might be required. Surgery is often required to repair a severely damaged thumb joint. Metal screws, pins or plates may be used to hold the joint together. The patient will also have to wear a splint or cast. Since thumb pain can also be caused due to certain medical conditions, it is important to identify the underlying cause. Generally doctors recommend the use of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs or cortisone injections for treating thumb joint pain caused due to different types of arthritis. Thumb abduction splints or braces can also be used for resting the thumb joint. Physical therapy and use of alternative healing methods such as massage and acupressure might also help in treating thumb joint pain and swelling. Certain thumb flexibility exercises can also help in reducing pressure on the tendons and relieve pain in thumb.

This was some information on what causes pain in thumb and how it can be treated. Since thumb pain can be caused due to certain medical conditions, don’t ignore the symptoms. If you are experiencing thumb pain, consult a doctor soon.
